Okay, lets just get this out in the open – Vacation does not mean throwing your diet and exercise out the window. You can still have a great time while eating right and finding ways to exercise.
Are you staying in a hotel?
Okay, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Did you know that most hotels now actually have a gym that their guest can use throughout their stay? You didn’t know that? Well, now you do – SO USE IT! If your staying at a motel that doesn’t have a hotel they might have a pool – go swim some laps. Hell, just run up and down the stairs for fifteen minutes (twice a day). Chances are they are just down the hall from your room.
Now lets talk about food at your hotel. Is there a restaurant in the hotel? Good – most likely they have a great salad option. Salads can be really filling when you include some grilled chicken or steak on top – just don’t forget to eat your greens! Or consider ordering a soup and half-sandwich – just watch overloading on the bread and butter or chips and salsa they put on the table prior to your meal arriving.
Are you camping?
So you like the great outdoors – AWESOME! You can’t get much better than hiking in the fresh air for a great full-body workout. You’ll sleep like a baby after a long day of hiking – which is good because sleeping bags on the hard ground are not always comfortable. Don’t worry you’ll be so tired you won’t even care.
Do you like to fish? I’m not one for cleaning my own fish, but I will tell you fish is a smart choice. cooked over an open camp fire – you’ll be feeling healthier as the days go by instead of feeling bloated and heavy from the all you can eat buffet many people visit while on vacation.
You wouldn’t really thing a theme park would be a great place for exercise – but you would be wrong. Disney is so large that without even knowing it you will walk miles and miles in a single day. Your so taken with the rides, character sightings, and all the amazing attractions that you don’t really realize, until you wake up sore the next day, that you have worked-out muscles you didn’t even know you had. So, skip the trolley, trains, and buses – WALK your way through Disney and you won’t regret it at the end of the vacation when despite the food you haven’t gained the weight you thought you would.
Yeah, Disney is great – but the food is questionable. I feel that way pretty much about all food that is produced in mass quantities on a daily basis and shoveled onto plates at the speed of light just to get thousands of people through the lines without strangling each other. Don’t get me wrong I love DISNEY – Who doesn’t? It’s just you really need to look at the menu to figure out what you should and shouldn’t eat there.
Heading to the Beach?
There is nothing more relaxing than a beach vacation. Also, nothing more likely to make you slovenly and lazy. Something about the sand, the water, the sun, and the heat that makes people forget to move. I challenge you – get out there on the beach early in the morning, before the sun starts pounding your body into the comfort of your beach towel, and WALK. Walking in the sand is great for your calves. Why? Well, the give of the sand causes your feet to sink slightly and forces you to use your muscles even more to push yourself up and out. You won’t really notice it at first, but do it for a while and you’ll start to see how much easier it is to walk on pavement. But, don’t do it – don’t go to the sidewalk instead. Take advantage of the extra love your giving your legs as you trudge through the sand – and take advantage of the view. How often do you get to gaze upon the amazing open ocean as you walk? Sure if you live on the beach you get it all the time, but most of us don’t, so enjoy.
Alright – I’m done preaching. Go enjoy your vacation. Just don’t forget that your body doesn’t have to suffer while you vacation. You can still eat right and exercise daily.
